Link your Aadhaar and PAN Online by June 30 to avoid paying Rs. 1000 penalty. Check the process here.
In order to avoid paying a fine of Rs. 1000, Aadhaar card holders need to link the card with PAN by June 30. If you have not linked it yet, you can do it now. It can be noted that the central government has extended the last date to link your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar to March 31, 2023. However, a host of penalties have been announced by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The department on March 30, introduced a sub-section (2) under section 139AA directing that a fine of Rs. 500 will be levied on linking the documents till June 30, 2022 and will be increased to Rs. 1000 after that.
Also, after March 31, 2023, the PAN of taxpayers who fail to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and all the consequences under the Act for not furnishing, intimating or quoting the PAN will apply to such taxpayers. The consequences include not being able to file return using the inoperative PAN; pending refunds cannot be issued to inoperative PANs, among others.

Taxpayers can note that with effect from April 1, 2017, it has become mandatory to quote their Aadhaar in the application form for PAN and return of income. Therefore, you need to link your PAN with Aadhaar as early as possible. Here is a step-by-step guide to do the same online.
How to link PAN with Aadhaar online
Go to the official Income Tax e-filing portal or click on the link – https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/.
Register on it (if not already done). Your PAN will be your user id.
Log in by entering the User ID, password and date of birth.
A popup window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with Aadhaar. If not, go to ‘Profile Settings’ on Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
Details such as name, date of birth, and gender will already be mentioned as per the PAN details.
Verify the PAN details on screen with the ones mentioned on your Aadhaar. It can be noted that if there is a mismatch, you need to get the same corrected in either of the documents.
If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click on the “link now” button.
A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN.
