LG has just started updating its 2019 flagship, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G to Android 12. In contrast, Xiaomi stopped supporting the Redmi K20 Pro.
Just days ago, Xiaomi made it public its decision to stop the support for its Redmi K20 Pro, which was otherwise known globally as the Xiaomi Mi 9T. The phone was launched in 2019 and Xiaomi announced that it reached the end of its life, and those who still use it now have to look elsewhere. However, in other part of the world where a company has stopped making new phones long ago, its 2019 flagship is still getting the latest Android version in 2022. Yes, LG out of all the companies is still supporting its old phones and its 2019 LG V50 ThinQ just got updated to Android 12.
The LG V50 ThinQ is getting the Android 12 update, although as its last one. Granted that the world is already prepping for Android 13 as we speak, it still nice to see LG making the efforts in updating its old phones with the latest software. The phone is getting the Android 12 update but with no modifications to overlying skin or user interface, which is fine considering that LG isn’t actively developing future versions of its software. However, those of you still using a LG V50 ThinQ are good to go for a while.
LG updates its 2019 flagship
Prior to this, LG also update the V60 ThinQ and the Velvet, it last few flagships for the world. The LG Wing is also part of this software support system. When LG shut shop last year, it had promised to update its existing phones even when it stopped selling new models. LG’s software wasn’t exactly brilliant to begin with but the software support situation is far better than some other who are still in business selling hundreds of phones a day.
Currently, most Android manufacturers are trying to enhance their software support duration for their flagships. Samsung leads the game now with four years of OS updates and five years of security updates. Samsung even provides up to three years of OS updates on its midrange Galaxy A and some Galaxy M models.
Most other manufacturers are following with a three-years support cycle. Xiaomi recently said it will support its Xiaomi 12 Pro with three Android OS update and four years of security patches. The same is the case for brands like Vivo, Oppo, and other. Motorola lags behind by promising at most 2 OS updates for its flagship.
